Surveillance capitalism is all around us. We live in an era in which all human experience, whether classed as leisure or work, is considered as free raw material for behavioural modification and profit. The technology corporations driving the institutionalization of this economic logic (Google/Alphabet, Facebook/Meta, Apple, Microsoft, Amazon) now have their tentacles in every aspect of society, including healthcare systems and primary school education. Previously, it was felt that we lacked the concepts and theories to make sense of this complex phenomenon and ask the right questions. In this Organization Theory Webinar, the leading intellectual voices on the subject offer powerful suggestions for how we should conceptually see the bigger phenomenon of surveillance capitalism, what questions we should be pursuing as organizational researchers and what overall our stance should be as social scientists at this critical moment.
About the speakers
Shoshana Zuboff’s most recent book is The Age of Surveillance Capitalism: The Fight for a Human Future at the New Frontier of Power. She is the Charles Edward Wilson Professor Emeritus at the Harvard Business School, a Faculty Associate at the Harvard Kennedy School’s Carr Center for Human Rights, and the Co-chair of the Prefiguration Committee of the International Observatory on Information and Democracy.
Michael Power is Professor of Accounting at the London School of Economics and Political Science, and also a Fellow of the British Academy. His research interests focus on issues at the intersection of accounting, auditing, risk management and organization theory and he is an editor of Accounting, Organizations and Society. He is currently working on traces and traceability for a sequel to The Audit Society (Oxford, 1997).
Mikkel Flyverbom is Professor with special responsibilities in communication and digital transformations at Copenhagen Business School, where he also co-directs the Digital Transformations platform. His newest book is The Digital Prism: Transparency and Managed Visibilities in a Datafied World (Cambridge University Press). He also serves on the Danish government’s Data Ethics Council and writes a tech column for the newspaper Politiken.
