Dear Colleagues,
the first issue of Industry & Innovation for the year 2026 is a special issue titled "Innovation and internationalization in the digital era: New theoretical perspectives and empirical evidence", co-edited by Claudio Fassio, Chiara Franco, and Daniele Moschella. This special issue brings together articles on how digital technologies are reshaping firms' innovation strategies, internationalisation patterns, and their participation in global value chains. The seven research articles address topics such as the role of digital production technologies in shaping export performance, the impact of digitalisation on global value chain participation, the strategic use of digital technologies by multinational enterprises, and the effects of robot adoption on reshoring decisions and employment. Additional contributions examine the relationship between digital technologies and GVCs in Italy, competitive dynamics in nascent digital markets such as the metaverse, and the role of inward foreign direct investment in supporting the development of Industry 4.0 technologies across European regions.

Abstract
This paper studies the relationship between digital production technologies and exports. Using data from the European Manufacturing Survey 2018 for Austrian, Croatian, German and Swiss manufacturing firms, we apply structural equation modelling to examine two possible transmission channels between digital production technologies and exports: first through productivity; second, through product-related services. The results reveal some heterogeneity in the ways different technologies relate to exports: while robots show a positive link with exports through the productivity channel, additive manufacturing and connected sensors are found to be positively related only to services which in turn influence exports. The results for logistics technologies, in contrast, suggest a positive relation with export activity through both channels.

Abstract
This study examines the relationship between the adoption of digital technologies and firms' participation in global value chains (GVCs), and the channels through which this relationship operates. Using a sample of Spanish manufacturing firms from 2006 to 2018, we analyse the impact of digitalisation on the decision to participate in GVCs. We construct a general synthetic index of digitalisation at the firm level, along with two additional indices capturing information and telecommunication technologies and automation processes. We find that digitalisation is a key driver of GVC participation, both through a direct effect and an indirect effect resulting from enhanced productivity. Our findings also provide evidence on the two channels -imports of intermediate inputs and exports- by which digitalisation affects GVC participation. In particular, ICTs are important for expanding export markets, whereas automation operates predominantly through the import channel and is limited to producers of intermediate goods.

Abstract
The use of digital technologies in commercial transactions affects both the strategies of international firms and the organisation of production across borders along a GVC. This paper examines the impacts of e-commerce on the internationalisation of firms and on the global extension of manufacturing MNEs. We consider how the use of digital technologies in commercial activities and the extent of control over international markets affect decisions around exporting and investing abroad. Final market transactions are approached through business-to-customer e-commerce (B2C), and inter-firm transactions through business-to-business e-commerce (B2B). Findings confirm general positive effects from B2C transactions, while B2B e-commerce with clients or suppliers reshapes global production networks in diverse ways, depending on the direction. Evidence is built using micro-data from Spanish manufacturing, examining companies that produce physical goods and adopt ICTs. Theoretical implications suggest a dynamic and mutually reinforcing relationship between the digitalisation and internationalisation of firms, enhanced by the GVC.

Abstract
This paper investigates the impact of firms' adoption of robots on reshoring, distinguishing between reshoring from developed (medium- and high-income) and developing (low-income) countries. It also examines whether reshoring occurs through the substitution of foreign suppliers with domestic ones or through in-house production. The study further analyses the effect of robotisation-induced reshoring on firms' employment. To estimate causal effects, we employ a combination of two-way fixed effects and Difference-in-Differences estimators with staggered adoption. The findings indicate that robot adoption leads to reshoring, primarily from developed countries, driven by the substitution of foreign sourcing with in-house production. Moreover, the results suggest that reshoring is associated with an increase in firm-level employment. However, when reshoring is coupled with robot adoption, the positive effect on employment is reduced, as robots are likely to contribute to the production of a portion of the reshored goods within the firm.

Abstract
This paper studies the relationship between firm participation in Global Value Chains (GVCs) and propensity to adopt digital technologies (DT). By leveraging data from a sample of about 25,000 Italian industrial firms for the years 2017–2019, we investigate whether participation in GVCs encourages firms to adopt DT; to what extent GVC relational governance is relevant to that choice; if the association between GVCs and DT is heterogeneous across firm size. The results show that: i) GVC participation is positively and significantly associated with the adoption of DT; ii) relational forms of GVC governance are positively related to operational DT; iii) in terms of propensity to use DT, the gain derived from being in a GVC is systematically greater for smaller firms. To the extent that GVCs foster the adoption of DT among small firms, they promote economic growth by spreading the effects of advanced DT to the whole economy.

Abstract
Does entry by a superstar firm change the competitive dynamics of nascent industries? Using USPTO trademark data and a quasi-experimental design, we analyse the introduction of new products in the metaverse. We develop a theoretical framework of heterogeneous strategies for market entry under uncertainty, contrasting digital vs. physical industries. Empirically, we show that firm size has a strong positive correlation with metaverse participation, and this effect is amplified for international, physical-goods firms and reversed for born-digital firms. Following Facebook's entry in 2014, we document a 10–12% decline in metaverse product introductions, particularly among smaller and international physical-goods firms. This decline coincides with an increase in the international scope of metaverse trademarks, suggesting that superstar firm entry into the metaverse reduced the quantity but increased the geographic scope of product introductions. Our analysis highlights intangible assets as key drivers of firms' competitive advantage in the global, digital economy, with implications for antitrust regulation.

Abstract
This study investigates the extent to which inward innovative FDIs can contribute to European regions' potential to access external knowledge useful for the development of Industry 4.0 (I4.0) technologies. By contributing to recent research on regional I4.0, we maintain that incoming multinational companies enable regions to access knowledge generated abroad that is usable for local I4.0 inventions. Using citation data about I4.0 patent applications and innovative FDIs, we estimate a gravity model that supports this idea. The knowledge base of I4.0 technologies developed in European NUTS 3 regions positively correlates with innovative inward FDIs. The correlation is driven by both greenfield FDIs and cross-border M&As, with FDIs originating outside Europe providing the greatest contribution to knowledge transfer. The findings are consistent with the relative weakness of Europe in the development of I4.0 technologies and suggest that place-based FDI policies could help European regions to overcome this gap.
