Dear colleagues,
Tomorrow we close out the year's EIB Seminar Series with Robert Audi (University of Notre Dame), and you will not want to miss it. Audi will press a question that sits at the heart of what we do: are virtue ethics and rule ethics genuine rivals in business ethics, or can they be reconciled?
Thursday, April 30, 2026, 4:00 to 5:30 pm ET
Collins 139, Rose Hill Campus
Zoom is available for virtual attendees

FORDHAM ETHICS IN BUSINESS SEMINAR SERIES
Robert Audi (University of Notre Dame)
"Is Virtue Ethics Compatible with Rule Ethics? Implications for Business Ethics"
Thursday, April 30, 2026 4:00-5:30 pm
Abstract:
This presentation will offer a conception of virtue ethics and rule ethics as contrasting approaches in ethics and as different ways of guiding business practices. Among the questions covered are what constitutes a virtue, how moral virtues are related to moral rules, and whether the two approaches to ethics-centering on virtue or on rules-are compatible. This will take us into questions of how each theory can be applied in the management of business practices. Some individual virtues will be considered, including veracity, loyalty, courage, and integrity. Some moral rules will also be described, particularly those requiring the avoidance of harm, the production of good, and the treatment of others with respect. In the light of what emerges, we will consider whether virtue ethics and rule ethics are compatible in the moral standards and business practices they support.
Bio:
Robert Audi earned his BA from Colgate University and his MA and PhD from the University of Michigan. He taught initially at the University of Texas at Austin, and then for many years as the Charles J. Mach University Professor of Philosophy at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln before moving to University of Notre Dame as Professor of Philosophy, Professor of Management, and the David E. Gallo Chair in Ethics. In 2009 he vacated the Gallo Chair and took a chair as John A. O'Brien Professor of Philosophy.
